Airline food is a punchline for a reason, so when American says it's putting "award-winning barbecue" in First Class, the honest reaction is suspicion. This time the suspicion is mostly misplaced: Pecan Lodge is a real, nationally recognized Dallas barbecue joint, not a catering company with a marketing budget. The catch isn't the food. It's how narrow the window is to actually get it.

What's actually happening

Starting September 9, 2026, First Class passengers on eligible domestic flights departing Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) can preorder Pecan Lodge for their meal-service flight: the smoked brisket sandwich on lunch flights, the barbecue platter on dinner flights. The meat is slow-smoked at Pecan Lodge's actual Dallas restaurant using the same technique that built its reputation, then packaged and finished by American's catering partners before boarding. This is an expansion, not a launch — American ran a smaller version earlier this year on DFW–New York flights, and is scaling it up after what the airline describes as strong customer feedback.

The fine print that actually matters

Three restrictions do most of the work here, and none of them are hidden, but none of them are in the subject line either. First, this is preorder-only — American says you need to lock in your meal at least 20 hours before departure through the website or app, so showing up hungry and hoping is not a strategy. Second, it's DFW-departing only. If you're flying into Dallas, or flying First Class anywhere else in the American network, this doesn't exist for you yet. Third, it only applies to flights that already have meal service, which on a domestic network means longer routes, not your one-hour hop to Oklahoma City.

Is it actually worth planning around

If you're already booked in First Class out of DFW on a flight long enough to carry a meal, preordering costs nothing extra and beats whatever the standard catering rotation is that week — that part is a clean win, no asterisk. What it isn't is a reason to build a trip around. This is a genuinely good perk for people already in the seat, not a new must-fly route, and American hasn't said anything about expanding it past DFW. Set the calendar reminder for 20 hours out if you've got a flight that qualifies, and don't expect to smell brisket anywhere else in the network yet.
